Voa (File photo) / An electrical short circuit could be have caused the fire at the Pequenos Libombos dam
A fire at the dam that supplies water to Mozambique’s Greater Maputo region on Thursday night was put out within two hours later, but the damage is yet to be assessed.
Delario Sengo, head of the Technical Department of Águas do Sul Regional Administration, Ara-Sul, said a short circuit was suspected.
Situated about 40 kilometers from Maputo, the Pequenos Libombos dam’s main function is to supply water to the Greater Maputo region, including the of Boane and Matola municipalities.
The dam has storage capacity of 400 million cubic meters, but because of the prolonged drought in the region, the dam currently only holds about 70 million cubic meters of water, or approximately 18 percent of its capacity.
Because of the lowness of reserves, the authorities are rationing water supply in the Greater Maputo region.
