Mozambique’s Defence Minister yesterday said that the Mozambican Navy, in the current context of hydrocarbons discoveries, exploration and exploitation, had, in collaboration with other institutions whose areas of interest are related to the sea, become an indispensable component in ensuring the full control of the coastline.
M’tumuke was speaking in Pemba during the closing ceremony of the first training course for speedboat operators, which had been going on since January of this year at the Pemba Naval Base with high-tech military equipment and supervised by foreign experts.
He said that the course was part of the challenge of building up the operational capacities of Mozambique’s Defence Forces in general and the Navy in particular, and aimed to equipping them with men trained for the defence and surveillance of territorial waters.
“There is every need to take advantage of this type of training in order to face threats such as piracy, illegal fishing, trafficking in human organs and people with albinism, weapons and drugs, among other evils that threaten the security of our country,” M’tumuke said.
In another development, the minister said he hoped that with the knowledge acquired the graduates would also in the future trains others who had not had such an opportunity.
Graduates who had excelled in the training received several prizes such as mobile phones and other valuables. The graduation ceremony was attended by the governor of Cabo Delgado province, Celmira da Silva, the commander-in-chief of the Mozambican Navy, reserve generals, military officers and other guests.
Before presiding over a military parade for the graduates, the Minister visited classrooms where he received explanations from foreign trainers about the handling of the equipment using simulators.
The boats are equipped with high-tech military equipment and can travel the high seas regardless of conditions. The trainees said they had learned enough to fulfil their commitment to uphold sovereignty.
Before the oath of the flag, the climax of the ceremony, M’tumuke reviewed the guard of honour, an act which symbolises the readiness of the Army.
