Pemba mayor Florete Simba Motarua says there is no more space in the Cabo Delgado capital to accommodate people displaced from districts affected by the terrorist attacks that have plagued that part of the country since October 2017.
Motarua told reporters that he was negotiating with the governments of the districts of Mecufe and Metuge in order to find space for families displaced by the terrorist attacks, since Pemba does not have space to accommodate any more of them.
The Cabo Delgado capital is one of the most popular destinations for families fleeing from districts affected by the terrorist attacks, especially Macomia, Ibo, Quissanga, Mocímboa da Praia and Muidumbe.
Unofficial figures suggest that more than 30,000 displaced persons have arrived in Pemba, and are now housed with family members in situations of extreme vulnerability. In total, more than 300,000 people have left their homes to escape the terrorist attacks.
On July 1, Motarua issued an order suspending the allocation of land until January 2021. The measure, ‘Carta de Moçambqiue’ has established, was aimed at preventing individuals suspected of being members of the insurgent group taking up residence in the city
