Mozambique: Ranger killed by suspected poachers in Gorongosa National Park
O País
The government has burned 200 mosquito nets that were being used for fishing in Pemba Bay. The public incineration took place yesterday on Paquitequete Beach, where most of the mosquito nets which have now been reduced to ashes were seized.
The nets were seized in Pemba Bay in January of this year by the Community Fisheries Councils in an operation run by the Provincial Directorate of the Inland Sea and Fisheries of Cabo Delgado.
Community Councils promise to continue raising awareness among fishermen and women, while warning that they will take anyone who continues using the nets for fishing to court.
Mosquito nets have become one of the main items of fishing gear along the Cabo Delgado coast, where domestic and foreign fishermen and women continue to plunder marine resources, even within conservation areas.
