The Judicial Court of Pebane District, Zambezia province, is selling ironwood seized in the Gilé National Reserve from illega logging.
Radio Mozambique cites Judge José Azilo as explaining that, in 2016, the Court put 231 logs up for auction, but no party showed any interest, and only this year had anyone showed an interest in buying them.
The court’s decision surprised the National Reserve of Gilé, the District Attorney’s Office and the ordinary citizen, because there was no widespread disclosure of the announcement.
The Public Prosecuor has not yet commented on the matter, but the presiding judge of the Pebane Judicial Court, José Azilo, did acknowledge that the deal was poorly publicised.
