Forty thousand people, including nationals and foreigners, could cross the border from South Africa into Mozambique at Ressano Garcia today to spend the Christmas and New Year with their families.
Of these, 15,000 will be miners who work for various companies in the neighbouring country, part of a total of 17,000 Mozambicans working in the mines, the first batch of which returned last night.
According to the national immigration authorities, today will be the busiest of the entire festive season.
Juca Bata, spokesman for Joint Operation Tsakane, explained that the Ressano border post will have 14 active service desks, in addition to reinforcement in material and human resources. Six high-speed service windows are dedicated solely to miners, a measure that aims to avoid congestion and long waits.
Bata indicated that the Ressano Garcia border crossing will also be Mozambique’s busiest, because of the influx of the miners transported in buses laid on by South African companies.
