Mozambique: Parties confront public prosecutor over annual report

The team of political dialogue mediators yesterday met the Renamo delegation in Maputo to discuss its position in relation to the first item on the negotiations agenda: its demand to govern in the six provinces of the centre and north of Mozambique (Niassa, Nampula, Zambezia, Tete, Manica and Sofala) where it claims to have won the general elections in 2014.
“The talks on the six provinces have started but we still don’t have an outcome. In this meeting we continued the reflection on the mediators’ request to present our position,” the head of the Renamo delegation, José Manteigas, told the press after the meeting.
The talks between the parties, which resumed on Monday, took place separately at the request of mediators. On Tuesday, the team of mediators met only the government delegation led by Jacinto Veloso, a member of the National Defence and Security Council .
The head of the Renamo delegation said that Renamo had not relinquished its demand.
“We demand the governance of the six provinces and demand the reinstatement of our men in the military,” he said.
The dialogue between the government and Renamo resumed on Monday after a break of 10 days at the request of mediators.
Renamo’s demands also include the distancing of political parties from the state apparatus, the demilitarisation of its men and their integration in the Defence and Security Forces.
