Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Monday urged the people of Monapo, in the northern province of Nampula, to give priority to preserving peace in order to maintain the rapid pace of development.
Speaking to a rally, the President said, “we have managed to build a lot of infrastructure here because Monapo, and Nampula province, continues to have peace”.
However, he lamented that in other parts of the country, particularly in the central region, development is being held back because of the climate of instability caused by attacks by armed men belonging to the opposition party Renamo.
President Nyusi urged the population to reject any action that could threaten peace, adding that continued stability would lead to the construction of further projects to benefit the people.
President Nyusi was speaking during a rally moments after inaugurating the provincial Teacher Training Institute which is located in Monapo.
The President is on a three-day working visit to Nampula province. On Tuesday he is due to travel to the districts of Muecate and Nacaroa.
During his tour of the province, President Nyusi is being accompanied by Labour Minister Vitoria Diogo, Science Minister Jorge Nhambiu, Justice Minister Isaque Chande, Deputy Interior Minister Jose Coimbra, Deputy Minister of State Administration Roque Samuel, Deputy Minister of Gender, Children and Social Welfare Lucas Mangrasse, and members of the presidential office.
