The political dialogue for the cessation of military hostilities in Mozambique resumes today after a two-week break.
Before the suspension of the dialogue on October 28, the international mediators handed over to the parties a package of principles on the decentralisation process to be submitted to the Assembly of the Republic, as well as a roadmap for addressing the remaining agenda items.
The two parties pledged to present a formal response to this proposal today.
According to a press release by mediation coordinator Mario Raffaelli, at the last session of the joint committee the Renamo delegation presented part of the missing documentation on their Defence and Security Forces proposals, one of the key points of contention so far.
Another point on which there is still no consensus is Renamo’s demand that it govern in the six provinces where it claims victory in the 2014 general elections. The government in turn demands that Renamo order the immediate cessation of attacks in the central and northern parts of the country.
The dialogue resumes in the form of bilateral meetings between the mediators and the two parties and, if consensus is reached, will progress to plenary meetings of the Joint Committee.
