Rail traffic on the Limpopo line has been temporarily interrupted following the derailment of a passenger train travelling between Maputo and Manhiça district.
The derailment occurred on Monday night on the branch line detour to Maragra, without causing casualties, and resulted in the suspension of service on the Limpopo Line, which gives access to the Port of Maputo from Zimbabwe.
Mozambique Railways (CFM) said in a statement that the locomotive derailed totally, and three passenger coaches partially, but without any report of injuries among passengers. The number of passengers on the train at the time of derailment has not been announced.
According to CFM, “sabotage, by individuals still at large” of the switch blades that allow the train to make the detour to the ‘Maragra Açucar’ [Maragra Sugar Estate] is the most likely cause of the derailment.
