Mozambique calls for immediate action to halt drought and desertification in Africa
A man was injured by broken glass in an attack on a bus in the Nhamatema region of Manica province in central Mozambique, police said yesterday. The incident took place early in the morning as the bus was traveling the Tete-Maputo route carrying recruits.
The injured man received treatment at Chimoio provincial hospital.
“The attack did not result in fatalities but caused only light injuries. One passenger was hurt by shattered glass,” Manica police spokesman Elcídia Filipe told the press. “At the moment, actions are underway to ensure order, security and public tranquility,” he added.
The coach driver said that he continued driving throughout the attack, and sought help for the injured passenger in Chimoio, 60 kilometres from the site of the ambush.
This is the second incident in Nhamatema this week, after a government delegation was ambushed on Monday. The attack, attributed to the armed wing of Renamo (Mozambican National Resistance), riddled the Manica governor’s motorcade with bullets, resulting in injuries to three members of a special police protection unit.
The wave of political and military violence in Mozambique has worsened in recent weeks as Renamo’s deadline for the start of governance in the provinces of Manica, Sofala, Tete, Zambezia in central Mozambique and Nampula and Niassa in the north approached.
Renamo has repeatedly promised to seize power in the six provinces where claims victory in general elections in 2014, accusing the ruling party, Frelimo, of having committed electoral fraud.
