The Standing Commission of the Assembly of the Republic of Mozambique (AR) today summoned parliament to an extraordinary session next Tuesday, to evaluate a report from the Presidency on the end of the state of emergency.
“The Standing Commission decided to convene an extraordinary session of the Assembly of the Republic for Tuesday, August 4, at 2:00 p.m. for consideration and deliberation on the report by the President of the Republic on the end of the state of emergency,” Standing Commission spokesperson Alberto Mutukutuku told a press conference.
Mutukutuku said that the 250 deputies of the AR would deliberate on the next steps after the end of the state of emergency declared to address the coronavirus pandemic.
Mutukutuku added that the Standing Commission had decided to ask parliament’s Commission on Legal, and Constitutional Affairs and Human Rights for an opinion on the report submitted by the head of state before the document was presented to the 250 deputies of the AR for debate and deliberation on Tuesday.
The Standing Commission would therefore meet on Monday of next week to examine this opinion.
President Nyusi has submitted to Parliament his report on the 120 days of the Covid-19 state of emergency in Mozambique between April 1st and the 29th of this month.
In an address to the nation on Wednesday, Filipe Nyusi called for restrictions on Covid-19 to continue to be adhered to even as the state of emergency, extended three times, ended.
“All the measures currently in force must continue to be followed with the same passion and rigour as before,” he said, adding that he would send a report to parliament prior to defining strategies and making decisions to be made public in a second address to the nation later.
“In the meantime, we call on everyone to value everything we have achieved in these 120 days. What we achieved is priceless: lives were saved,” he said.
The restrictions in force include limitations on gatherings, a ban on entertainment events and spaces, and the mandatory use of masks.
Mozambique has registered an accumulated total of 1,808 cases of coronavirus infection, with 11 fatalities and 638 patients account fully recovered.
