The Mozambican parliament approved by consensus on Wednesday a civil aviation bill adjusting the country’s civil aviation legal framework to the new dynamics of the sector, AIM reports.
Speaking yesterday in parliament during the presentation of the bill, the Minister of Transport and Communications, Carlos Mesquita, said that the adoption of the law would give the government the means to regulate civil aviation matters and clarified the role of the Civil Aviation Institute of Mozambique, changing it by statute to the Civil Aviation Authority.
The former 2009 civil aviation law created an Aviation Regulator, but “after more than five years of the law, there is a need to adapt the current legal regime to ensure compliance with the international standards and procedures prescribed by the International Civil Aviation Organization,” Mesquita said.
The minister said that the civil aviation industry is heavily regulated at national, regional and international levels. “The government has established an administrative modernization plan to improve the quality of public services with efficiency gains, taking into account developments in technology and aviation technology,” he said.
Parliament also in its Wednesday session definitively approved the Telecommunications Bill approved in general in November 2015. The bill was approved by both Frelimo and Renamo members, with the Democratic Movement of Mozambique voting against.
