Mozambique’s Assembly of the Republic (parliament) will meet via videoconference today to debate the extension of the Covid-19 state of emergency, a parliamentary source has announced.
The 30-day extension was announced on Sunday night by President Filipe Nyusi, and is expected to come into force at midnight on Monday. Ratification by parliament at this afternoon’s session is expected.
Only members representing constituencies in Maputo city and province will be present on the parliamentary premises in the capital, while those from the remaining nine provinces in the country will participate via video.
The third extension of the state of emergency – the maximum provided for in the Constitution – is conditioned with the phased lifting of some restrictions.
Schools will reopen in stages, international flights with certain countries will resume, more staff will be allowed in the workplace, and museums will be able to reopen.
All activities must follow preventive measures relating to social distance, hand washing, wearing of mask and reduced mobility.
Mozambique had, by Sunday (June 28), registered a cumulative total of 859 Covid-19 cases, with five fatalities and 228 patients accounted fully recovered.
