A new system governing parking in Maputo came into force from Thursday, 3 June.
Chairman of the Municipal Company for Mobility and Parking (EMME), João Ruas, explained that system allows drivers to pay for parking via mobile phone by accessing a USSD code (*210#) or by downloading and installing the mobile application (M-Parking), or even via the web.
João Ruas said that the digital platform allowed secure, efficient payment using services such as M-Pesa, E-Mola, M-Kesh, credit or debit cards or via an EMME agent.
Ruas noted that the new form of payment would ensure that payments were channelled directly into the Municipality’s coffers, creating sustainable investment finance for the urban infrastructure sector and improving provision of services to citizens.
The new charging system will first be introduced in the Baixa, specifically on Samora Machel and Albert Lithuli Avenues. After consolidation, it will be extended to other arteries in the country’s capital over the next six months.
Payment for parking in Maputo is nothing new, but has been part of municipal regulations dating back to 2014, a mechanism operated by city council employees who collect parking fees on public roads.
