Mozambican sports, particularly adaptive athletics, is celebrating the winning on Saturday night of its first ever Paralympics medal – the bronze won by Edmilsa Governo in the 400 metres-T12.
The Mozambican sportswoman did what she had promised – bring back a medal. She missed out in the 100-metre T 12, but hit the jackpot in the 400 meters, an event where she says she feels “like a fish in water”.
The athlete, who was accompanied by her coach Filipe Chaimite, set a new personal best time at 53.89, beating her own semi-finals time of 54.94 seconds. She was mere tenths of a second from beating Ukrainian Oskana Boturshuk to silver at 53.14 seconds.
Gold was taken by the world record holder, Cuban Omara Durand, who finished in 51.77 seconds, a new Paralympic and world record. Spaniard Melani Berges came in fourth with 57.66 seconds.
Having previously won bronze in the Doha World Cup in 2015, the result puts Governo in a good position for the Paralympic Games in Tokyo in 2022, where she can perhaps hope for gold.
