Papal visit to Mozambique: Pope Francis doesn’t want high spending in hotels – report

Pope Francis has instructed the Catholic Church in Mozambique not to exceed the minimum needs in what concerns accommodation expenses, Jornal Domingo reports.
The High Pontiff has even rejected a first proposal concerning accommodation expenses for the papal entourage, saying it must be accommodated in a less expensive hotel.
“The Holy Father wanted a very simple hotel, and rejected the first choice sent to the Vatican, asking for less expensive accommodation for his secretaries, undersecretaries, bishops and cardinals,” the Auxiliary Bishop of Maputo said on Sunday.
The papal entourage is 50 strong, and will stay at Hotel África in Maputo, which is already subject to security restrictions.
This will be the second time a Pope visits Mozambique.
The first papal vist took place 31 years ago, in September 1988, when Pope John Paul II came to Maputo at a time when the country was still at war.
Pope Francis is due to arrive at Maputo International Airport in the late afternoon of 4 September.
The next day, the Pope will pay a courtesy visit to the Mozambican president at the Ponta Vermelha Palace, where he will meet members of the government and representatives of civil society and the diplomatic corps and give his first speech.
Later that morning, the leader of the Catholic Church will attend an Interfaith Meeting in the Maxaquene Pavilion, where he will address a young audience.
After lunch at the Apostolic Nunciature, the Pope will go to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, where he will make his third and final address of the day to an audience of bishops, priests, seminarians and catechists.
On September 6, the Pope is to visit Zimpeto Hospital and then celebrate Mass in the Zimpeto National Stadium, after which he leaves for Madagascar.
