Maputo will have restrictions on traffic and informal business during Pope Francis’ stay, especially on Friday, the day of a visit to the health facility in the Matendene neighbourhood and the Mass at the Zimpeto National Stadium.
Police units were on the ground performing final rehearsals for the ceremony yesterday, Noticias reports today.
Traffic Police say they have prepared a road safety plan to ensure road safety during the two days of the Pope’s visit, and say traffic will be restricted on Avenida de Moçambique on 6 September.
Authorities expect increased traffic on the day of papal Mass at the Zimpeto National Stadium, and have advised against using private cars to get to the event.
To ensure traffic safety and circulation, traffic police are situating reinforcement in nearby Matola. Police have also asked parents and guardians not to let minors go to the stadium unaccompanied.
To enable people to welcome the Supreme Pontiff, the government is expected to declare a special public holiday [tolerância de ponto] for the city and province of Maputo on Friday, 6 September.
In its “Practical Guidelines for Parishes and Christians” for Pope Francis’s visit, the Mozambican Episcopal Conference has issued a communique which reads:
“On the 4th, at 5:30 pm, let us all welcome the Holy Father along the streets the Pope Mobile will follow from the airport. We will position ourselves as follows:
Pastoral Zone 02 and Legion of Mary: From Airport Square to the Mozambican Heroes Square;
