A resident of Palma has been found beheaded, allegedly by terrorists, ten days after the retaking of the town by the Defence and Security Forces (FDS).
According to ‘O País’, after the return of the population to the town, the man discovered food products hidden in his house in the Vila Sede neighbourhood. After reporting the matter to the authorities, the citizen was found dead.
“Yesterday, Sunday, there was a scare because a decapitated body was found in the Malanga area,” said Pedro da Silva Negro, member of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Palma. “It is assumed that a citizen returning to his residence found an enormous amount of products,” he told a group of journalists who visited Palma on Monday.
The Defence and Security Forces had removed the products when the man was found beheaded at his residence.
“It seems that the owners of the products did not like what happened, so they came and beheaded the individual in the night,” da Silva Negro speculated. The beheading is the reason the authorities suspect terrorists, since it is their ‘modus operandi’.
When asked by ‘O País’ if the beheading meant that terrorists were infiltrating the town, and who was in command of the return to normality in the village, da Silva Negro replied: “I can’t confirm it.” “Where there is war, no matter how much security there is, there are always small outbreaks [of violence].”
Júlio Sebastião, a Palma resident who has remained in the town with her family, said that the man beheaded was called Birus. The news had spread and was dampening enthusiasm for returning to the town. “The population were coming back, but the beheading has stopped that,” she said.
“We are not feeling at ease,” she confessed. “We live here in Palma but we are not feeling settled, because we are afraid that they [the insurgents] are in the woods. Everybody’s afraid,” she declared.
