A Mozambican businessman who owns a well-known clothing store in central Maputo was abducted about two weeks ago, the Mozambican police (PRM) confirmed on Wednesday.
Speaking to Lusa, PRM’s General Command spokesman Orlando Mudumane confirmed the disappearance of the businessman, already reported by some media outlets but not yet officially acknowledged.
Orlando Mudumane said that the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) was investigating the case, but did not going into details owing to the “confidential nature” of the case.
The businessman is the second to be abducted in Maputo this year, the owner of a well-known wine bar in the capital having been held captive for several weeks and then released in circumstances not as yet fully explained.
A wave of kidnappings hit Mozambique’s main cities in 2012, but crime of this nature had all but disappeared more recently, as a result of the arrest and conviction of those involved.
