Mozambique: Chapo and Mondlane meet - AIM report
French citizens in Maputo, who were registered to vote in Sunday’s presidential election, gave overwhelming support to the centrist candidate Emannuel Macron, and imposed a crushing defeat on the far right candidate, Marine Le Pen.
According to the results released on Monday by the French embassy, there were 361 French citizens registered to vote in Maputo, of whom 219 cast ballots.
There were 12 spoiled ballot papers and 207 valid votes. Of these, 194 (93.7 per cent) were cast for Macron and only 13 (6.3 per cent) for Le Pen.
The overall count in the presidential election has not yet finished. But as of late Monday morning, 99 per cent of the votes had been counted and almost two thirds of them were for Macron.
As the count continued overnight, Macron’s lead increased and he now has 66.1 per cent (20,753,797 votes), while Le Pen was on only 33.9 per cent (10,644,118 votes).
Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi has already met Macron. On Nyusi’s official visit to France in July 2015, Macron, who was then Minister of Economy, Industry and Digital Affairs, was his host at a lunch with the French business community.
