The authorities have so far repatriated 538 people since the mission to repatriate Mozambicans who fled to Malawi as a result of the post-election tension was launched last Saturday.
There are believed to be about 7,000 refugees. The repatriation had been scheduled to take place on Thursday. However, when the action was about to start, torrential rains began to fall, causing a sharp rise in the Shire River, making it impossible for boats to cross from the Malawian side to the Mozambican bank.
The action, which intends to repatriate about 350 to 400 people each day, runs from 07.00 to 17.00 in three boats that carry a total of 50 people per journey.
The refugees are from the districts of Morrumbala and Milange, in the central province of Zambézia, and from Mutarara and Dôa districts, in the neighbouring province of Tete. They had fled into Malawi to escape the unrest following the announcement of results from the 9 October general elections widely believed to be fraudulent.
However, the 538 people who have been repatriated so far are only from Morrumbala District.
According to the Morrumbala administrator, João Nhanbessa, the authorities have created the conditions to receive the people, although there are still no firm dates to conclude the repatriation mission.
