Police of the Republic of Mozambique have announced in their regular weekly briefing the operational tally for the week February 16 to 22. There were a total of 1,325 arrests, of which 1,090 were for border violations, 228 for common crimes and seven for illegal immigration.
As to the type of crimes committed, of the 129 registered, 22 were against persons and 80 against property. Twelve were disturbances of the peace, 10 were ‘ordinary’ crimes, two were related to exercise of functions and three to cybercrime.
At 21, the number of road accidents was lower than in the same period last year (27 accidents). This year’s accidents resulted in the deaths of 18 people, against 19 last year. Excess speed and reckless pedestrian behaviour were identified as the main causes of the accidents.
As to drug trafficking and use, the police arrested 17 individuals for drug trafficking and drug-related offences and seized 450 grams of cannabis sativa, 100 grams of mandrax, four grams of cocaine, 80 crack ‘rocks’ and 29 doses of heroin.
In the Khongolote neighbourhood, police took possession of 61 AK-47 rounds found by a 36-year-old man digging holes for a fence round his house.
