The new president of Renamo, Ossufo Momade, yesterday emphasised the cohesion of his party, ensuring its “commitment to peace”, but said he would however remain in the Gorongosa mountain range while the dialogue for “an effective peace” continued.
“We will need a lot of unity to win the next elections,” Momade said at the end of the 6th Congress in Gorongosa, Sofala, central Mozambique, in his first speech as president-elect of Mozambique’s main opposition party.
Momade, who has been running the party for eight months after the death of former leader Afonso Dhlakama, said that his motto “Renamo – united for victory” would prevail.
He said that his election strengthened the party’s internal democracy, thanking the military wing for their support and for allowing the stronghold in the Gorongosa mountain range to be the place where Afonso Dhlakama met Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi during the recent peace talks.
“This lesson [of not going back to war] is in our heads. We will not go back to war, ever,” Momade said, reasserting that Renamo had “made a commitment” to the pacification of the country through dialogue.
