The history of the ‘tofo’ – the dance of Maputo’s Mafalala neighbourhood – is portrayed in a short documentary to be presented on Saturday at 7pm in the neighbourhood’s “campinho” [small sports field].
Mafalala and the dance practised there, the tofo, gave its name to the group of women from the province of Nampula and the film screening will mark the group’s 25th anniversary.
The film, entitled “Orukuneya wa Mafalala” [Games from the neighbourhood of Mafalala], was produced by the Iverca Association in association with filmmaker Ivan Barros.
In addition to interviews with the members of the tofo group, a dance practiced on the coast of Nampula province, the short film has the participation of artists who agreed to contribute to the project.
Among these are the bands Eyuphuro and Zacca and rappers Iveth and Simba, the latter also the artistic director of the initiative, which was produced in 30 days.
Ivan Larangeira, director of the Iverca Association, said that the initiative hoped to contribute to the documentation of the many nuances of the neighbourhood’s history.
“Our idea is that the history of Mafalala be documented in books and audiovisual format, and this documentary is part of the process,” he said yesterday after a brief presentation of the film to a group of journalists.
Laranjeira added that the idea was also to break down barriers in the perception of traditional Mozambican dances, particularly tofo, and to create a basis for their promotion inside and outside the country.
The documentary will be available on several virtual platforms. As a start, 500 copies will be produced and sold to the many tourists who visit the Mafalala neighbourhood annually.
