Orlando Conde, one of four brothers who made Mozambique’s debut in the African Cup of Nations, dies at the age of 70

The Mozambican Football Federation (FMF) announced today the death of Orlando Conde, a former athlete and one of four brothers, along with current coach Chiquinho Conde, who made the country’s debut in the African Cup of Nations (CAN).

“A key figure in Mozambican sports, Orlando Conde stood out in athletics, basketball and football, and is considered a true national idol. His career was closely linked to Clube Ferroviário da Beira, where he remained active on several fronts until his final days,” the FMF recalled today in a statement.

Orlando Conde died of an illness on Saturday night, May 18, in the city of Beira, at the age of 70, according to the same statement.

“He was the eldest of a family deeply linked to national sport, with names such as Geraldo, Elcídio and Chiquinho Conde, the latter currently the national coach, standing out. In 1986, the four brothers represented Mozambique in the country’s first participation in the final phase of the African Nations Championship,” recalls the FMF in its statement mourning the death of Orlando Conde.
