Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosario said yesterday that the wood seized in various parts of the country during Operation Tronco would revert to the state and would be used for the production of school furniture and to fulfill other internal needs.
Speaking at the Assembly of the Republic during question time, Carlos Agostinho do Rosário, explained that Operation Tronco had resulted in the seizure of 150,982 cubic meters of wood.
At the same time, he recalled that the government’s current five-year program advocated the careful management of natural resources and the environment as a determining factor for the achievement of sustainable and inclusive development.
“Operation Tronco was launched earlier this month with the aim of combating violations of forestry legislation and ensuring the sustainable management and exploitation of our forest resources,” the prime minister said.
Operation Tronco launched simultaneously in the provinces of Cabo Delgado, Nampula, Zambézia, Tete, Manica and Sofala with the aim of tracing an estimated 700,000 cubic meters of illegal timber valued at 20,000 million meticais.
In the meantime, the government was continuing to promote and encourage the development of agriculture to raise production levels and competitiveness in the sector as a way of contributing to food security and reducing dependence on food imports.
According to Carlos Agostinho do Rosario, the incentives include exemption from customs duties on imports of inputs, exemption from payment of VAT on the first sale of goods and services by agricultural operators and a reduction of 50 percent on the tax on diesel for agricultural projects.
