Mozambique: Geny Catamo, hero of the portuguese classic
Mozambique’s national football team arrived in Accra, capital of Ghana, in the early hours of this morning to prepare to meet the Ghanaians on Thursday in the third round Group H qualifier for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon.
The Mambas left Maputo yesterday on a commercial flight, stopping over in Johannesburg before joining a connecting flight to the Ghanaian capital. Dominguez, Hélder Pelembe, who plays in South Africa, and Zainadine Junior (China) departed from Maputo and were joined in Johannesburg by Jumisse, who plays in Angola. Team members who play in Europe – Clésio, Witness and Simao – will join the party in Accra.
The Mambas have three training sessions planned in Accra before the match – one later today and two tomorrow. One of tomorrow’s sessions will take place in the match venue, to familiarize players with the pitch.
Kick-off in Accra is scheduled for 15:30 p.m. local time, and will mark Abel Xavier’s match debut as Mambas coach. Xavier has taken over the reins at a critical time, Mozambique having lost 1-0 to both Rwanda and Mauritius in the CAN 2017 qualifying rounds.
Highlights of the 20-strong team Xavier has assembled for this “thorny” operation are the return of Simao and the exclusion of Stir. First-timers in the national side include Lolo, from Estrela Vermelha, Mucuapel from União Desportiva do Songo and Witness from Nacional da Madeira.
