The application deadline for the 2016 SEED (Supporting Entrepreneurs for Environment and Development) awards has been extended to March 31. Applications are open for social and environmental start-ups answering local needs.
Eligible enterprises must be locally-led and demonstrate entrepreneurship and innovation and have economic, social and environmental deliverables, with the objective of becoming financially sustainable. Enterprises must be in the early stages of development and meet country-specific gender requirements.
Innovative entrepreneurs from Malawi, Mozambique and Namibia can apply for four SEED Africa Awards sponsored by the government of the Netherlands in partnership with NGOs, research institutes and international organizations.
SEED is a global partnership with a focus on sustainable development and green economy founded in 2002 at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, which draws on the principles of the United Nations environment and development programmes and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.
SEED supports grassroots socially and environmentally aware start-up enterprises in developing countries, capacitating them with tools and network building to help them expand.
Prizes ranging from funding and capacity-building sessions to business profiling and networking opportunities.
Previous winners include an Ethiopian-owned manufacturer of solar products for rural communities, a South African cooperative specializing in innovative waste-management solutions for rural Limpopo and a Malawian enterprise that sells low-cost organic fertilizer as a response to the country’s food insecurity.
