Daviz Simango, president of the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), has called on the President Nyusi and Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama to trust each other so that dialogue can lead to the restoration of peace in the country.
Simango was speaking in Nampula on Saturday at the 7th anniversary celebration of the country ‘s third-largest political party.
Simango said the two sides should strive to restore peace for the sake of the Mozambican people, who are suffering as a result of the resumption of armed conflict in the centre of the country.
According to the leader of MDM, polarized dialogue has shown that it will not bring about lasting peace, with all the money spent on the Joaquim Chissano Conference Centre meetings failing to avert military clashes.
Simango added that it was necessary to acknowledge that military action destroys the country, the lives and property of Mozambican families, and causes the migration of citizens, outcomes which make it extremely difficult to start a reconciliation process to bring about the peace that Mozambique needs.
“However, it is my hope that there is in fact sincerity in the parties’ involvement in the dialogue process. For the MDM, the only weapon that Mozambicans should be carrying at this point is the democratic weapon, the rule of law, with freedom and transparency in the electoral process,” Simango said.
