Only six countries flying to Mozambique on reciprocal basis

Only six countries are currently offering flights to Mozambique on a reciprocal basis, reveals an Aeronautical Information Circular (CIA) prepared by the Civil Aviation Institute of Mozambique (IACM), to which ‘Carta’ has had access.

These are Portugal, Turkey, Qatar, Ethiopia, Kenya and South Africa.

Entitled “Prevention and Containment Measures in face of the Covid-19 Pandemic in National Civil Aviation”, the circular leter, published on 11 September this year, determines that the resumption of reciprocal regular flights for the transportation of passengers and cargo is authorised for those six countries and limited to two a week [each].

“Airlines in other countries may express an interest in flying to Mozambique through diplomatic channels,” the circular letter explains.

With regard to crews and passengers of international entry, the circular reveals that everyone is subject to a 14-day quarantine for Covid-19 screening.

Among other measures, the circular further stipulates that all passengers arriving in the country must “present proof of test (…) with a negative SARS-Cov-2 result, performed in the country of origin in the last 72 hours before departure”.

The IACM’s circular letter also determines that crew members must undergo mandatory quarantine under state supervision, during their maximum 24 hours rotation rest.

On board the aircraft, the circular determines the use of masks, recommends social distancing, and requires that planes be equipped with one or more universal precaution kits for use in protecting the crew.

After each flight, the IACM requires that aircraft be fully disinfected with substances suitable for use in aviation. The authority also requires that passengers and cargo be properly disinfected prior to boarding or loading onto the aircraft.

The Mozambican civil aviation regulatory authority finally declares that the CIA cited comes into force on the date of publication.

The circular arises with the need to transport specialists, managers and investors into the country, to boost tourism and business.
