Only 8,000 kilometres of Mozambique’s classified roads are tarred, out of a total extent of 30,000 kilometres, Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources João Machatine has told parliament.
Minister Machatine explained that it was not possible to tar all the remaining roads in one governance cycle, and defended giving priority to those with a greatest impact on the country’s development. Meanwhile, Machatine pointed out, carrying out routine maintenance and keeping roads in passable condition remained paramount.
While the government’s priority was with economically sustainable roads, the routine maintenance of other road infrastructure, including bridges, must necessarily depend on the contributions of users, Machatine said.
Answering questions from members of the Assembly of the Republic, João Machatine said that about US$600 million was earmarked for the rehabilitation of National Road Number One (EN1) this year.
Minister Machatine also reiterated, in response to members’ questions, that road concessions would remain an unavoidable element in contributing to maintenance.
