Authorities have attributed an attack on an army-escorted convoy on the EN7 between Catandica and Vanduzi in Manica, central Mozambique which killed one woman and wounded another to Renamo.
Manica police spokesman Elcidia Filipe says the dead woman was shot in the head and the other injured by flying glass when shots were fired at a Linhas Terrestres de Moçambique (LTM) bus travelling in the convoy on Friday (21 October) afternoon.
Filipe also reported that during the subsequent pursuit of the attackers, two Renamo positions were overrun and 95 AK-type rounds recovered.
Police accused the same armed group of having burned nine houses and a car belonging to a traditional authority in Muco in Mossurize district, Manica, a four-year-old child suffering burns in the incident.
However, Renamo in Manica rejected the police charge, insisting that the Defence and Security Forces (FDS) were responsible for the destruction of homes on the grounds that the residents supported the armed opposition wing.
“Now 536 families are homeless in Mossurize because their houses were set on fire by the FDS,” Renamo delegate in Chimoio Manuel Zindoga has replied, asserting that the greater evil comes from state forces.
Mozambique’s central region has been the scene of numerous clashes between the armed wing of the main opposition party and the FDS, with mutual allegations of the abduction and assassination of Renamo and Frelimo activists.
