Mozambique makes its debut tomorrow at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro with swimmer Jannah Sonneschein competing in the 100 meters butterfly at the Olympic Park in Barra.
Swimmer Igor Mogne springs into action on Tuesday, August 9th, and Mussa Tualbudine and Joaquim Lobo compete on Sunday in the canoeing events, as does the judoka Marlon Acacio in the under-81 kg class.
Kurt Couto, who will compete in the 400 meter hurdles, only comes into play on 12 August. Athletics is the last sport to start, being considered the ‘main’ Olympic Games. With the exception of Couto, all Mozambique’s national athletes are participating for the first time.
Mozambique’s Olympic canoeing pedigree reaches back to the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, and canoeist Lobo will be the flag bearer of the national delegation during the opening ceremony. Kurt Couto was the flag bearer in the London 2012 Olympics.
