Bassirou Diomaye Faye has officially won the presidential elections in Senegal in the first round. The opposition candidate garnered 54.28% of the vote, while the government candidate Amadou Ba obtained only 35.79%.
Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s victory was already a certainty after the publication of partial results, the numbers announced in Dakar by the president of the National Electoral Commission, Amady Diouf, only confirming the extent of his win.
Diouf highlighted the transparency of the results: “Every voter was able to express themselves through their vote. Therefore, we want to thank them for this work and this sense of personal sacrifice, which shows that they have ensured sincere results and a sincere and transparent election.”
On Wednesday (27-03), U.S. President Joe Biden congratulated Faye and “the Senegalese people, who demonstrated that the right to vote – and the fact that this vote is taken into account – remains the threshold of freedom in a democracy”.
The victory of the anti-establishment candidate, who only ten days before the vote was serving a prison sentence, must now be validated by the Constitutional Council, which could happen within days, depending on whether any appeals are lodged.
In the absence of any challenges, “the Council will immediately proclaim the final results of the scrutiny”, as provided for in the Constitution. In the case of any appeal, the Council theoretically has five days to pronounce its decision.
