Frelimo president Filipe Nyusi said on Saturday that sustainable development in Mozambique would not be possible without unity and cohesion in the ruling party.
Nyusi also called for Mozambicans to unite in observance of measures aimed at halting the spread of Covid-19.
Filipe Nyusi launched his challenges on Saturday in Ponta do Ouro, Matutuíne district, Maputo province, at the end of the IV Session of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Mozambican Youth Organisation (OJM), the youth wing of the party.
“If we don’t defend ourselves against Covid-19, each himself and the others, because now there is contamination – you don’t know and someone contaminates you or you know and you don’t protect yourself and contaminate others, because you do not know whether you are asymptomatic or you are sick – we will not be able to achieve our objective, which is to develop Mozambique in a sustainable way,” the Frelimo president said.
The Frelimo president highlighted terrorist attacks and the self-proclaimed Renamo Military Junta as factors limiting the country’s development.
“One cannot speak of development with attacks by the Renamo Junta in the centre of the country, with terrorism and all kinds of crimes in our country,” Nyusi said. “It is not possible. If a businessman wants to develop the economy and is kidnapped the next day, entrepreneurs will be wary. If people cannot speak freely, they will be afraid and will not produce. If they are attacked, because terrorism also inflicts fear, there is no longer production. People will not go to the machamba, will not build homes, will not circulate,” he said.
Regarding the terrorist attacks in Cabo Delgado and instability in the centre of the country, Nyusi called on Mozambicans to distance themselves from “intrigues, rumours and disinformation”, thereby contributing to the solution of problems and not to the worsening of the current situation.
Filipe Nyusi chose sustainable development as the theme for his address to the members of the Central Committee Secretariat of the youth wing of the ruling part. He urged the party youth to focus in their activities on the needs of the people and the poorest, so as to contribute to improving the quality of life of Mozambicans.
On the same subject, Nyusi said that gross domestic product, more than simply growing, needed to impact on human development indicators, pointing out access to food, water, energy and housing as fundamental to sustainable development.
The Frelimo president however said that Mozambicans must be patient regarding wealth distribution.
“There is a lot of talk about wealth distribution, but there is still no wealth to distribute. Gas is not yet being exploited,” Nyusi said, in reference to gas exploitation projects being implemented in Cabo Delgado.
OJM Secretary-General Anchia Talapa Formiga added that young people should be part of the solution to the terrorist attacks in Cabo Delgado and the instability in the centre of the country, urging them to avoid inadvertently fomenting misinformation in social networks and in media.
