Nyusi urges tolerance and respect – Watch

Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Tuesday urged all Mozambicans to show tolerance and to respect the thoughts of others, as the only way to preserve peace, which he regarded as indispensible for development.

Speaking at a rally in the locality of Muzumane, in Mandlakaze district, on the second day of a working visit to the southern province of Gaza, Nyusi declared there is no reason for people to kill each other just because they have different ideas.

“I don’t understand why people have to kill each other, since the enemy, which is poverty, has already been identified”, he said. “Let us all unite to increase production so that we can do away with this evil”.

He pointed out that when the founder of the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo), Eduardo Mondlane, set up the national liberation movement, he did so by merging three movements which had different ideas, but came together in the common fight for the country’s independence.

“I respect the ideas of all Mozambicans”, said Nyusi, “but they should all also respect my ideas”.

He insisted that developing the country, and improving living standards depends on increasing production. “You don’t fight hunger with words or with meetings, but with the spirit of hard work”, he said. “We must increase production in order to reduce the cost of living and live in peace”.

The President also warned that only authorised state bodies, such as the police force, should carry weapons. “Nobody can keep guns at home”, he said. “These must stay with the police”.

Nyusi also inaugurated a chicken slaughterhouse in Muzumane, belonging to the Tongasse livestock company owned by a young Mozambican, named Jorge Mondlane.

The slaughterhouse cost about 50 million meticais (about 813,000 US dollars). The company has six poultry pavilions. Two of them supply the slaughterhouse, and each can hold 24,000 chickens. The other four pavilions are for laying hens which produce about 25,000 eggs a day. The company currently employs 90 workers.

Nyusi said this company is a good example of the fight against poverty, and should serve as an inspiration for young people across Mozambique.

“Small initiatives like this make a difference in producing chicken meat and eggs to supply the domestic market, to reduce imports of these goods, and to create jobs”, said the President.

Jorge Mondlane said that his goal is to supply the market for chickens and eggs in all of southern Mozambique, and thus end imports of chickens. The next step towards reaching this goal would be to build a plant making chicken feed.

The Tongasse commercial director, Bonifacio Mondlane said that with its current installed capacity, Tongasse can also slaughter and process chickens from other local producers.

“We are currently supplying the Gaza and Maputo markets”, he said, “and we shall soon enter the market of Inhambane province”.
