Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Tuesday urged Mozambicans to take 1 December, World AIDS Day, as a fate for reflection on the collective actions needed to achieve the desired goal of a generation free of HIV and AIDS.
In his message marking the date, Nyusi stressed that the government is committed to promote a healthy Mozambique, and urged all of society to adopt responsible behaviour.
The date is being marked in Mozambique under the motto “Protecting adolescents and youths from HIV and AIDS is to guarantee a Healthy Mozambique”.
“This theme has the merit of stressing the importance we are giving to protecting those who will be the men and women of tomorrow and who are the most visible face of the pandemic”, said the President.
Special attention to this age group, added Nyusi, seeks to transmit a message of determination to young people, “who are the reason for our hope, so that they will join their effort to that of the government, moving towards a Mozambique of zero new infections”.
Nyusi said he was particularly concerned at the high rate of HIV infection among girls, which is three times that among boys.
The fight against HIV and AIDS should be stepped up, he urged, through permanent education and raising of awareness, involving parents, teachers, opinion leaders and young people themselves.
“Together we can present the life projects of our young people from ending in a tragic and abrupt manner as currently happens”, he declared.
According to the most recent statistics, 11.5 per cent of Mozambicans between the ages of 15 and 49 are HIV-positive.
