Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Thursday urged the Ministry of the Interior to redouble its efforts to accompany the dynamics of crime in order to return calm to citizens, and allow society to develop normally.
Speaking at the opening of a meeting of the Ministry’s Coordinating Council, held in Maluana, about 80 kilometres north of Maputo, Nyusi said the country is living through difficult moments in its history because of the attacks by gunmen of the rebel movement Renamo and the unfavourable economic conjuncture.
The combination of these two factors was causing disturbances, and raising the cost of living, which contributed to a rise in crime.
Cited in Friday’s issue of the Maputo daily “Noticias”, Nyusi said the police must work so that citizens can undertake their productive activities in peace without the risk of being attacked or killed.
“We want national and foreign investors to feel free to release their business initiative without fear of being assaulted, kidnapped, or of losing their property”, the President insisted. “People should feel safe in their houses, with their property protected”.
He warned that these goals can only be achieved if care is taken over who is recruited to become members of the police force.
“We must reflect on how to improve recruitment, training and internal control”, said Nyusi, “as well as working conditions and the entire machinery of the Interior Ministry”.
He stressed the need to build a good image of the police, and of the civil identification services. The latter have been repeatedly criticized for long delays in providing citizens with identity documents, and for the apparent ease with which forged documents are issued.
Nyusi urged the Ministry to ensure that good quality services are provided, which supply citizens with reliable identity documents that are credible inside the country and abroad.
