Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Thursday urged graduates of the Higher Institute of Health Sciences (ISCISA) to devote their maximum efforts to help the country overcome crises.
Speaking at a graduation ceremony for 200 students who had completed courses in such subjects as paediatrics, maternal health, social services, nutrition and radiology, Nyusi said “faced with the current economic and social situations and the adversities our country is going through, let us use our intelligence and hard work to overcome these challenges”.
“If a nutritionist trained here guides the public in rationalizing the few resources available at a time of drought, he will be contributing to this objective”, added the President. “If maternal health nurses and paediatricians embrace their tasks diligently, we will reduce the number of mothers who die during childbirth and also reduce infant mortality”.
The current crisis can only be overcome, if Mozambicans are healthy, said Nyusi, and thus provide “the human capital that can help take the country out of our current difficult situation”.
He praised the role of ICSISA in the Mozambican health system. So far around 1,300 health staff had graduated from the Institute, and were helping provide high quality public services. Such was the reputation of ICSISA that its graduates immediately found employment.
A message read out at the ceremony, by Inacio Domingos, the best student among the graduates, expressed hope that the current armed attacks by the rebel movement Renamo will soon cease. The students praised the willingness shown by the government and Renamo to resume dialogue, and hoped that an effective peace would be reached.
Nyusi accused Renamo of committing atrocities in the central provinces. “While your commitment as nurses is to add value to life, by reducing death and suffering, there are those who provoke deaths and injuries, killing and making life difficult for Mozambicans”, he said.
