Members of Mozambique’s ruling Frelimo Party should learn to listen to opposing ideas, urged President Filipe Nyusi on Monday.
Speaking in his capacity as President of Frelimo, Nyusi was visiting the Maputo provincial headquarters of the party, in the southern city of Matola, as part of the preparation for the 11th Congress of Frelimo, scheduled for September.
Cited in Tuesday’s issue of the independent daily “O Pais”, Nyusi struck a conciliatory note. He declared that in Mozambique there are no enemies, but only “brothers”, who should learn to solve problems on the basis of dialogue, and in peace and harmony. Reconciliation, he stressed, should always form part of the life of Mozambicans.
“Let us continue in this way, all together, and tolerant”, Nyusi insisted. “There are no enemies in Mozambique. We are all brothers. It is necessary to hear the opinion of others, and not provoke war with anyone”.
Nyusi reaffirmed that the top priority, not only for Frelimo members, but for all Mozambicans, should be food production. He said advantage should be taken of the rain that had fallen recently in Maputo, to increase production, at a time when the country is still heavily dependent on foreign aid.
After taking care of household consumption, “what remains, we shall keep for seeds”, said the President. “But there will always be a part for us to sell. We must sell, so that we can buy a house, so that we can talk on the telephone, so that we can purchase electricity, so that we can pay our water bills”.
After Nyusi’s introductory speech, the meeting between the President and the Maputo provincial Frelimo members continued behind closed doors.
