President Filipe Nyusi has thanked the Vatican for encouraging the government to establish dialogue with Renamo in search of effective peace in Mozambique.
The president was speaking on Saturday at the Santo António da Polana Church in Maputo at the farewell mass of the Apostolic Nuncio in Mozambique, Monsignor Edgar Penha Parra, who will take up new functions in the Vatican State in Italy.
“We gained the courage to contact our other brothers, carrying the message of peace, and in the following month of 2016, we achieved the truce that until today has suspended a significant part of the suffering of the Mozambican people. With the same determination, encouraged by the initiative of Bishop Edgar, we proceeded to a peace meeting and, by the Lord’s grace, we went to Gorongosa, where we built trust among brothers which led us to a remarkable consensus. And as I always say: there is no finished peace process; it must be continued and all prayers should be renewed,” President Nyusi said.
President Nyusi said that history had taken note of the didactic form with which the Apostolic Nuncio in Mozambique, Don Edgar Penha Parra, used to invite everyone to fight for social justice.
Bishop Pena Parra said at his farewell mass that faith was born of listening to preaching. The bishop is to take up a post in the Vatican State in Rome.
