Mozambique: President Chapo visits Eswatini
At the start of a three-day working visit to Gaza province yesterday, President Nyusi was interacting with the population in the newly created district of Limpopo and discussing the lack of public infrastructure and services there.
Licilo, where the popular rally was held, provided a good example. The electricity supply there is weak and unreliable, as evidenced by the frequent power cuts preceding the president’s opening address. “The first thing was clear – that energy in Licilo is not good enough,” the president said, publicly acknowledging the problem and promising that it would be gradually resolved.
Limpopo district was created as a result of the new administrative division of Gaza approved by the Assembly of the Republic in 2016, but the division only took effect last year with the allocation of 1,168 km2 of land previously belonging to the districts of Xai-Xai and Bilene.

And it was there that Nyusi once again promised that the construction of Gaza airport would start this year. “The airport will happen, as I said. The technicians have been here and done the measurements; they have tested the ground and the tender has already been launched in China. The company that wins has promised to start construction of the airport this year.”

Financing is not a problem, because it will come from China. “There is already money. It has already been donated: the agreement has been signed – it is not in doubt,” President Nyusi said, taking the opportunity to counter those who criticise the prioritisation the project in what, despite its agricultural, livestock and tourism potential, is still one of the country’s poorest provinces.
“Why do they not want people to develop Gaza? Why do they talk politics when we want to develop Gaza? Is that their problem? ”
The president also sang the praises of Chibuto’s resurgent heavy sands exploration project, which he will visit on Tuesday. The project will boost the province’s development, offering employment and stimulating infrastructure development.
“Many of our brothers are going to have a job. It will happen; it has already started. The information I have is that they are working on building a railroad from Chibuto to Chókwè. Thereafter, Gaza will move forward on its own.”
The president’s programme also includes visits to Chibuto, Massingir and Manjakaze, where
the president will inaugurate a 50 million meticais slaughterhouse capable of processing 12,000 birds in eight hours.
