President Filipe Nyusi announced yesterday that he had sent invitations to international entities to accompany the resumption of political dialogue between the government and Renamo, Mozambique’s largest opposition party.
Speaking in Maputo during celebrations of his 58th birthday, the president explained that he had maintained contact with Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama, having both come to an understanding about the appointment of “international advisors” for the parties.
“Today, February 9, I address the invitation to those who will advise or who will attend the process (of dialogue),” the president said.
He explained that the Renamo leader has indicated those advisors trusted by him and accepted by the government, and, as head of state, he had invited them. The president stressed that the international experts and personalities would not mediate political dialogue but would contribute to the process of decentralization of the country.
“They are specialists, not mediators. When discussing decentralization there are universal standards in a democratic country. The same applies to military matters,” the president said.
He pointed out that the experts were nonpartisan. “They do not even know the history [of Mozambique] particularly well. They only know about the processes they are going to monitor,” he said.
On Monday, after reaching consensus with Dhlakama, the president indicated the members who would be part of the government team that will discuss decentralization and military matters with Renamo.
On decentralization, these are Albano Macie and Eduardo Alexandre Chiziane, and on military matters, Armando Alexandre Panguene and Ismael Mussa Mangueira.
Renamo has appointed Muhambi Macuiana and Maria Joaquina to address decentralization, and André Joaquim Magibire and Leovilgildo Buanancasso for military matters.
On Mozambican Heroes Day last Friday, Nyusi announced the end of the phase of political dialogue involving international mediators, while calling on them to express their readiness to attend if their presence in the process of seeking effective peace in Mozambique was requested again.
He also revealed that the political dialogue between the government and Renamo would resume soon, and military matters and decentralization would be discussed.
