Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Thursday inaugurated a series of mobile bridges to be used in emergency situations, such as severe floods, in which roads are cut.
The equipment was acquired in China, but financed entirely by the Mozambican government to the tune of 11.9 million US dollars. It consists of ten metallic bridge platforms, each transported by a specialized vehicle.
The mobile bridges are currently in Boane district, about 30 kilometres west of Maputo. The longest of the bridges inaugurated by Nyusi is 75 metres long, and others are 45 and 21 metres long. They are all five metres wide, and can carry a maximum load of 60 tonnes.
“Mozambique is cyclically assailed by disasters, including droughts, but also heavy rains which cause floods”, said Nyusi. “We have several ways of solving problems caused by floods, and one of them is to restore quickly roads that have been cut”.
“The government must prevent. It cannot just weep and lament, but must bring solutions”, he added. “One of the solutions is what we are inaugurating today. We didn’t want to wait for the rain. This equipment is ready for use wherever it is needed”.
Nyusi said the government wants to see the mobile bridges stationed in the southern, central and northern regions of the country. He stressed that they do not replace the metallic bridges that have been installed in various places, but are immediate solutions in cases of emergency.
