Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Friday urged national and foreign businesses to invest in retail trade throughout the country.
He was speaking in the western city of Tete at the inauguration of a shopping centre that is the largest in Tete province. Named simply the “Tete Mall”, the centre covers 27 shops, plus administrative services, a car park, and other public utilities.
The Mall belongs to Mara Delta, the developers being South African group McCormick Property Development, and the shops include branches of the South African supermarket chain Shoprite, the Botswana-based chain Choppies, the South African clothing store PEP, and the fast food outlet, Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC). The Mall employs 600 Mozambican workers.
Addressing the inauguration ceremony, Nyusi said he was pleased to learn that McCormick intends to expand to other parts of the country, including Pemba, capital of the northern province of Cabo Delgado, and the southern city of Matola. He added that he would like to see this company open businesses in Lichinga, in Niassa province, and in Mocuba, in Zambezia.
Nyusi stressed that the Tete Mall will help establish business linkages in the chain of agricultural production in the Zambezi Valley.
He claimed that the new mall will not compete with small Tete traders, but will operate as a partner and an alternative source to supply the rural zones of the province. Nyusi believed that the McCormick group will help transform Tete into a modern city, which can offer its residents a range of good quality services and products that are up to international standards.
Tete provincial governor Paulo Auade said Tete consumers expect to find on the shelves of this new shopping centre Mozambican products, such as the potatoes grown in the Tete districts of Angonia and Tsangano.
AIM found that Angonia potatoes are indeed on sale in Choppies, as is locally caught fish (tilapia).
