Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Tuesday inaugurated a tarred road between Mandlakazi and Macuacua in the southern province of Gaza, which will dramatically cut the time taken to travel between these two towns.
When the road was just a dirt track, it took about two hours to drive along the 36 kilometres from Mandlakazi to Macuacua. With the new tarred road, the time taken has been cut to 25 minutes.
It is hoped that the road will stimulate economic activities in the area, reduce transport costs for agricultural inputs and produce, and cut expenditure on vehicle maintenance.
“The stretch I have just inaugurated will facilitate internal communication in Chibuto and Mandlakazi districts”, said Nyusi, “which will help consolidate commercial activity and promote cultural exchanges between the two districts. With this road, investment in tourism in Gaza will be increasingly facilitated”.
Work on paving the road began in June 2016, and it was concluded in June this year. It cost 387.2 million meticais (about 6.5 million US dollars), paid for entirely by the Mozambican government.
While in Mandlakazi, Nyusi also delivered 16,000 desks intended to meet the shortage of desks in Gaza schools. The first 2,000 of these desks are for Mandlakazi district. The priority districts for the rest are Mapai, Massingir, Chongoene, Bilene and Chicualacuala.
The delivery of this furniture, Nyusi said, was intended to end the scenario in which many thousands of pupils are obliged to sit on the ground during their classes, which contributes to their poor academic performance.
“I am leaving just some of the desks here in Mandlakazi”, said the President. “But by the end of next month you (Provincial Governor Stella Pinto Zeca) will have all the desks in all the schools”.
The programme of the Gaza provincial government envisages that by the end of 2019 all pupils in Gaza’s schools will be sitting at desks and not on the ground. Bringing this deadline forward, said Nyusi, resulted from a strong commitment to mobilising funds for acquiring desks.
He urged the schoolchildren of Gaza to take good care of the desks, in recognition of the efforts made to acquire them.
