Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi said on Friday that expanding the institutions of the administration of justice is a measure which seeks not only to improve their performance, but also to shorten the distance citizens need to travel to seek redress for injustices they may have suffered.
He was speaking at the inauguration of new premises for the provincial attorney’s office in Pemba, capital of the northern province of Cabo Delgado.
By increasing the reach of the institutions of justice, “we want to ensure greater speed in handling cases, to provide a better quality of service, and to create the conditions so that citizens can denounce all practices that violate the law”, said Nyusi.
During his visit to Pemba, the president also inaugurated new premises for the Cabo Delgado branch of the National Employment and Professional Training Institute (INEFP) which, under an agreement signed with the company Capital (which will administer the courses), is intended to train young people in disciplines that will give them access to the labour market.
The general manager of Capital, Andrew da Silva, told Nyusi that among the practical courses given here are soldering, plumbing, mechanics and electricity which vary in length depending on the needs of the trainees.
Nyusi said the government will continue to bank on the expansion of technical and professional education because the country needs to reduce its dependence on foreign skilled workers to meet the needs of its development.
The President also inaugurated the Cabo Delgado Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism, and in the afternoon he chaired the launch of the Geographic Information System (GIS) Inter-institutional Platform, which is supervised by the Ministry of Transport and Communications.
A GIS is a computer system for capturing, storing, checking, and displaying data related to positions on the Earth’s surface. It can show many different kinds of data on one map, thus enabling users to more easily see, analyze, and understand patterns and relationships.
Nyusi called for wide publicity to be given to the Mozambican GIS portal, particularly among district level officials, in order to share information about such matters as natural phenomena, the location of water supplies and forests, and the situation of infrastructures such as the road and electricity networks.
