President of Mozambique and Frelimo Filipe Nyusi has apologised to the people of Sofala for having gone to the Gorongosa mountain range to meet Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama without informing the provincial secretariat of the party and local government.
Speaking on Friday at the 11th congress of the ruling party in Matola, Maputo province, Nyusi said he had done so because he feared his comrades would prevent him from going, and said the Defence and Security Forces, when they learned of his intention, also initially opposed the idea.
Nyusi said that his trip to Gorongosa was however nothing out of the ordinary, as he went as president of Mozambique and Gorongosa was part of Mozambique. “I am not the president of Maputo, but of the whole country,” Nyusi said.
He added that the meeting with “my brother Dhlakama went well, so much so that far from the 45 minutes we had forecast, the conversation ended up lasting two hours”.
Nyusi said that it was not worth asking what the conversation was about, as that was already known: it was peace in Mozambique.
Also during the session, he apologised to Sofala for any embarrassment, explaining that during the meeting he told Afonso Dhlakama that he would visit his father, to whom he said “you will not be with my father but with the Régulo [traditional chief] Mangunde, of one of the localities of the country of which you are president”.
At the same time, Nyusi apologised to the population of Manica for being late to a rally after his trip to the Gorongosa mountains, which lasted much longer than expected, because, in his words, “it was a lively conversation”.
