Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Friday declared that police agents must show respect for citizens, impartiality, and respect for human rights and for the country’s institutions.
Addressing the closing ceremony of a basic course in the police training school at Matalane, on the outskirts of Maputo, Nyusi said the Mozambican police have the mission to protect people and property. In doing so, they must guarantee public order and tranquility, and respect for the Constitution and for democratic institutions.
“The hostilities carried out by individuals acting outside of the law means the police force must redouble its efforts to build up the capacity of its agents, and the government is obliged to draw up strategies to improve the protection of citizens, property and infrastructures”, added Nyusi.
The police are required to act with rigour, intelligence and integrity, he continued, because “criminals are constantly changing the way they operate, using ever more sophisticated methods”.
Nyusi told the graduates that the course marked the end of one stage in their careers, and the beginning of a new march which will require from them courage and determination to face unconditionally the challenges imposed by the resurgence of crime.
“This course has provided you with sufficient knowledge to neutralize criminals and reduce the levels of crime in society”, the President said. “The people expect total commitment from you. Faithfulness, loyalty and discipline are demanded of you”.
Nyusi warned that police agents “cannot be involved in acts of corruption. They must denounce all attempts at bribery”.
The police, he insisted, must be present to respond to all high risk situations, advancing fearlessly and with dedication and sacrifice.
